Back to School: A Continence Plan Checklist for Parents of Bigger Kids

A new school year brings new teachers, new aides and sometimes a new school. Getting continence care set up properly in the first week saves a lot of back-and-forth later.

Here's a checklist to work through before term 1 starts.

1. Meet the people who'll be doing changes

Ask for a short meeting with your child's teacher, aide or the staff member who handles personal care. Cover:

  • How your child lets people know they need a change (words, signs, AAC, behaviour cues)
  • How often they usually need changing
  • How they change best: lying down, standing, with a hoist
  • Any skin, seizure or medical considerations

2. Put it in writing

Most schools use a personal care or continence plan. If yours doesn't, offer to write one. Include:

  • Product type and size
  • Change times and signs a change is needed
  • How to fasten the product properly
  • Skin care (cream, what to watch for)
  • Privacy expectations
  • Who to contact if there's a problem

Ask your OT or continence nurse to review it if you can.

3. Check the change space

Is there a private, height-adjustable change table or bed? A hoist if your child needs one? If the space isn't suitable, raise it early. Schools may be able to access funding or equipment.

4. Pack a supply box

A labelled box that stays at school with:

  • Products for at least a week or two
  • Wipes, gloves, barrier cream, disposal bags
  • Two full sets of spare clothes
  • A wet bag for soiled items

5. Set up a communication loop

A home-school book or app note can track:

  • Change times
  • Anything unusual (leaks, redness, discomfort)
  • When supplies are running low

It helps you spot patterns and means you're never caught out by an empty box.

6. Protect your child's privacy

It's okay to ask the school how they'll keep continence care private from other students. Changes should happen discreetly, and talk about them should stay between the staff who need to know.

7. Set a restock reminder

Put a recurring reminder in your phone every few weeks to check the school box. Or ask the school to let you know when it's half empty.
